Over the last few years, there have been over 100 bed in a box mattresses that have emerged. We’ve all seen the extensive marketing campaigns, but is all of the hype surrounding these mattresses just bluff and bluster?
Well, here are some of our critiques:
First, let’s discuss our main area of concern: the support layer of the mattress. To reduce shipping costs, bed in a box mattresses are vacuum sealed, rolled up and shoved into a box. In order to accomplish this, these manufacturers must compromise on the support layer of the mattress. In our opinion, any material that is able to be vacuum sealed to just a couple on inches in depth lacks the proper density to provide adequate support. Furthermore, the Sleep Foundation notes that those weighing 230 pounds or more report not being provided with adequate support when they sleep on a bed in a box mattress.

Second, let’s discuss another concern we have with bed in a box mattresses: the inability to try it before you buy it! In Mattress Gallery Direct’s over 30 years in operation, if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that each and every person has a different comfort preference. What ‘works’ for one person might not work for the next. So although you might see good reviews on a bed in a box mattress. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a good fit for you.
